Hi, My name is Alyssa and I’m a third year Music Business student at Belmont University. This semester I am an intern in the Marketing Department at Centricity Music and am specifically working with online marketing under Rebekah.
As an intern, I work to keep artists’ tour dates and information up to date online and help with Centricity’s overall online presence. I also get to sit in and participate in the weekly department meetings, a rare opportunity for interns in the music industry. During these meetings I have learned new things about the different formats of radio and what a promotional tour might look like. I have also learned about album release timelines, marketing budgets, and radio charts.
The interns (there are 2, myself included) are challenged to brainstorm and share ideas on how to market artists and their records. I have found the business side of the music industry requires a lot of creativity, even if they aren’t the ones writing the songs and playing the music. As a part of the internship, I utilize some video editing skills and am getting better at troubleshooting iMovie but most of my time is spent laughing at Steve*. (*Laughing with him if you’re reading this, Steve).
But in all seriousness, Centricity is the first record label I have been a part of and so far the experience has been all I expected and more. The office is full of seasoned industry professionals and is like one big family, which is one of the things I love about Centricity. The staff is friendly and more than happy to answer my numerous questions and I am privileged to be gaining such valuable experience with such a great team.
The following are my Top 4 Reasons to be an intern with Centricity (which does not include the fact that there are a lot of Texans in the office).
4. Mumford time. The hour we listen to Mumford and Sons and watch Rebekah cringe.
3. Talking about music is encouraged and dare I say, cool.
2. You don’t have to be ashamed that you like and listen to Katy Perry… because they do too.
1. You get to hang around with cool people like John Mays, Rebekah, and Steve Ford.
